The primary food for all bivalve shellfish is microalgae, so it is a critical component in all shellfish hatcheries.

Each shellfish species has a preferred microalgae culture. Some prefer diatoms (microalgae that have a silica shell and do not swim) and some prefer flagellates (no shell and ciliates or "feet" that help them move around). But it is very important that the shellfish get a variety of cultures in order to stay healthy.

Reed Mariculture has worked with Pacific (gigas) oysters for 4 years to develop an optimal growth diet. Our oysters were grown in large tanks and are fed a diet that is heavy in CHGRA and enhanced with Tetraselmis and Isochrysis. With this diet were able to grow an oyster from 1 gram to 60 grams in 8 months.

All of our microalgae cultures are excellent for growing bivalve shellfish. You will need to experiment with your larvae to discover the diet that works best for your animals, or contact us to see if we have customers raising the same or similar animals.  Nannochloropsis is too small for most shellfish except mussels.
